Artist Information
Although a traditionally trained wood sculptor, there is nothing conventional about Alex Jones' sculpture. He has a dynamic and original approach to his work. In fact, Alex believes in using his work to challenge people's perceptions about the world around them. His quirky approach to each individual sculpture makes people look at the subject in a new and exciting way. Whilst primarily working in wood, Alex also employs other techniques – gilding, casting, knitting in wire etc – to enhance the exceptionality of his work.
At the moment, Alex's focus is on animals and plants. He looks at the weird and the wonderful and puts them under a magnifying glass. The results are magnificent contemporary works of art which challenge your sense of scale and with incredible attention to detail. Thus you can see every facet to a prawn's aluminium armour, every seed of a 7ft high dandelion's clock and every warty growth on a bronze chameleon's back. Things that may have once seemed insignificant or repellent suddenly become beautiful, tactile and iconic.
A sculptor for 15 years, Alex studied at the City & Guilds Art College in London
followed by an apprenticeship with Peter Turing, a woodcarver in West Sussex. Since 1992, he has been based in Winchester working continuously on private commissions. These have been as varied as a coat of arms for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the statue of Mary in Stoke Charity Church and a huge contemporary mirror for a London club. A highly successful exhibition in 2002 gave him the opportunity to take his work to a new level, creating pieces which highlighted the diversity of his incredible skills - buzzing wasps, a gigantic spider and beautifully realised sensual figures depicting Greek myths. Now working towards his next exhibition, Alex continues to work on private commissions. If you would like to contact him, please ring 01962 860267 or e-mail alexjones66@btinternet.com. |
