BESTIARY
3 July - 18 September 2010
Aldershot Military Museum Queens Avenue Aldershot GU11 2LG
Although a traditionally trained wood sculptor, there is nothing conventional about Alex Jones' sculpture. His quirky approach to each individual sculpture makes people look at the subject in a new and exciting way. Whilst primarily working in wood, Alex also employs other techniques - including gilding, casting, knitting in wire - to enhance the exceptionality of his work.
At the moment, Alex's focus is on animals and plants. He looks at the weird and the wonderful and puts them under a magnifying glass. The results are magnificent contemporary works of art which challenge your sense of scale and with incredible attention to detail. Thus you can see every facet to a prawn's aluminium armour, every seed of a 7ft high dandelion's clock and every warty growth on a bronze chameleon's back. Things that may have once seemed insignificant or repellent suddenly become beautiful, tactile and iconic.
A sculptor for 15 years, Alex studied at the City & Guilds Art College in London. Since 1992, he has been based in Winchester working continuously on private commissions. Alex is now putting together his next exhibition - BESTIARY - which will take place in November 2009. A bestiary is a compendium of beasts made popular in the Middle Ages in illustrated volumes that described various animals, birds and even rocks and plants. They were usually accompanied by a moral lesson reflecting the world itself and the belief that every living thing had its own unique meaning.
